This terrific article summarises the tension that any leader, not just a Head Coach; feels.
“The technical side of coaching must combine with the art of people management to create an environment for people to thrive – so long as luck doesn’t go against you.”
But what I think it misses, is just how much people enjoy leadership. This comes through in many of our interviews with Great Coaches. They view pressure as a privilege, as Billie Jean King so eloquently put it; and see their role as the chance to influence peoples lives for the better, by accelerating the learning they will experience in “normal” life.
It can be difficult, challenging and un-nerving; but that very discomfort creates growth and the sense of achievement that energizes your life.
