Roberto, Good afternoon, and welcome to the great coaches podcast.

Roberto Mancini  00:05

Thank you.

Paul Barnett  00:06

You've had experience with some great coaches, people like voidaan boss golf and spend, you're an Erickson, from this experience. What do you think the great coaches do differently?

Roberto Mancini  00:19

Yes, I was really lucky to work with these gotchas that you say, I think that coaches are great, because they have the ability to deal with good players. And also they have knowledge of they work superior of the others[PB1] .

Paul Barnett  00:45

Your father encouraged your football. In fact, he would take you on the bus for 10 hours to go and watch eventers play when you were a child. How did he influence your philosophy as a coach?

Roberto Mancini  00:57

Yes, I remember very well, because I was really young and really happy. But my father did not influence my philosophy as a coach. But he made me passionate about football. By taking me with him to see you went to see champion League Championship, many times with 10 hours, bias. But I remember very well, that moment,

Paul Barnett  01:29

it must have been very special. Yes, you left home and moved to the blender Academy, when you were just 13. And talking about that you said it was something I had to get through because obviously, I wanted to be a footballer. And that involves making sacrifices. But it was very hard to when you talk to young people about making sacrifices and building resilience. What do you tell them?

Roberto Mancini  01:54

Yes, I left the home and my parents when I was really young 13 a hold. And it was very difficult, very difficult in that time. And to became a footballer, I made many sacrifice. And for this I can tell to the young people commit themselves to have a passion for football, to and to segregate themselves. For what they like to do. This is very important, is important that you can do what you like,

Paul Barnett  02:31

you have had success coaching teams in Italy, England, in Turkey, and with players from many different cultures. When you start with a new team as the leader, what are the first things you do?

Roberto Mancini  02:44

Yes, I was really lucky to work in different different countries. First thing is I want to know immediately all their first name, because it's very important to get to know them, and then know what they think about the team. And their role, their role for the season. And after when we talk about technically situation where they want to prefer to play. I think this is very important to to have their project for the season.

Paul Barnett  03:24

On your Facebook page. I recently saw a lovely quote from you, where you were talking about the special scarf you were wearing, that had a prayer written in 10 languages on it. Yes. You said, Today with me, I have a special scarf for those who believe and for those who trust in tolerance and love for the neighbor. What message do you have as a world leader in football, on tolerance?

Roberto Mancini  03:47

I think not only because I'm a leader in football, like many people, but all the personnel should be like this, I think that they believe is essential to have respect for the people forever people and they waste to thinking and they they because this is very important to have a tolerance for all the paper. I

Paul Barnett  04:12

think that the only like these we can live with peace in the world. And is there an example recently, where you've helped a group of people be more tolerant?

Roberto Mancini  04:23

I think that this can apply every day, every day, also for the young people now because if we can help them, we can improve our work in the future.

Paul Barnett  04:39

Roberto, I have another great quote from you. The perfect coach doesn't exist. There's the most winning one at a particular time. And he's not necessarily the one who brings home cups or titles, but rather a coach capable of giving a mindset to a group and getting results even without 11 champions. And so I wanted to ask what Advice. Do you have other leaders on giving this mindset to a group?

Roberto Mancini  05:04

Yes, I know, I know, many great coaches that are very, very great. But they didn't win never. But I think that there are many good coaches. But sometimes they can't win. But they teach how they play a good football, to entertainment, they finance and made the good players. I think that this is important. Because to win, you should be also lucky. Sometime.

Paul Barnett  05:36

luck, but also hard work of varying virtues.

Roberto Mancini  05:41

Yeah, short is short.

Paul Barnett  05:42

Is there a team in your mind or a season where hard work? Yeah, made the difference. In the end result with the championship,

Roberto Mancini  05:53

I think that you need to work very hard every every day, every single day. Because only by these, this way you you can take something to win. And when I work in England with Manchester City, we work in different because we need that we work in a different way from England. But when I went there, we work very hard because we we won the championship after 50 years. And only by this way you can win. Your swords have displayed a variety of styles and systems over the years to win championships. So much so that it's very hard to say that you have a preferred game style. And so I wanted to ask, what advice do you have other leaders on learning and evolving? Yes, I think that you must always to know very well, your your job. This is very, very important. I was also lucky because I played the high levels for many years. And I worked with the great coaches and different styles. And for for these I learned a lot from from them. And for me is is not problem to work with different system. This is important to know what you have your ends for what is your best way, with the players that you have?

Paul Barnett  07:29

Roberta, you've always talked about the importance of having a winning mindset. In fact, you said a winning mentality always pays off. If someone wanted to build this mentality in their team, what would you tell them to do first,

Roberto Mancini  07:43

and not only football, I think I think this is very important. Every work that you can do. But I think is essential to make the players believe in themselves, first of all, and that they can beat anyone. And the work on this way, is the basis of the great wins. Because maybe you need maybe more time. But if you believe in yourself, always, always every day, every single day, I think that you can improve where you can

Paul Barnett  08:19

get the greatest results when maybe you are not the best team. There are times when you have coached teams that have won championships after long periods. Manchester City, as you talked about earlier, winning after 50 years. And then there was lotto. And the same thing happened at inter as well. When it comes to these big games, how do you keep the players and staff calm and focused on their role?

Roberto Mancini  08:43

This is not easy. It's not easy, especially when you are close to the finish line. And but in those moments, the quality the mentality of the group that you work on comes out and and then I think that the experience you get the spirit that you had in the past. And in that moment I remember very well the last game with Manchester City they in that moment, you need also a little bit of luck. Also if you with sem to won that championship, but you know sometime you need it's clear that they are the war what you said before is very important. But the the experience of the mentality type in this is important.

Paul Barnett  09:30

If I was to ask you to reflect on your coaching journey so far. Is there a moment that is really special for you that you could share with us?

Roberto Mancini  09:40

I can say that I am very happy for what I did as a player for 20 years. And what I did as a coach in the last 20 years because you know, this is a sport. You can win and you can lose but It's important to be there to be with young guys to work every day to build something, something special is, it's clear that you win is better, but to work in football for many years, also when you finish to play football, I think there's a massive moment. And I am very happy for these for these 40 years. You played

Paul Barnett  10:25

for 15 years at Sampdoria. And reflecting on it you said, it's a fantastic thing to play for a club like Barcelona or Rio, but to play for a team who has won very little, and help them achieve great things is I believe better. So I wanted to finish by asking you What's the legacy you hope to leave as a coach?

Roberto Mancini  10:45

Yes, I would never like the to play for barsa Real Madrid when I was young, but my football life was a totally different and I'm very happy to make the piece of history of a team's like Sampdoria last your disease, I think that I am in the center of these two clubs, there are not many players that can say the same things. And this is a is a good for me, what I can leave right up to leave to defiance at the moment, at the moment that can remember for years, like city supporters, and and that some players to improve, but not only as a player, but also as men. I think that for a manager, this is a is a great thing.

Paul Barnett  11:46

And perhaps just one last question to finish. I know you have children, and if you were to give those children one piece of advice about leadership, what would you tell them

Roberto Mancini  11:58

work very hard to have respect for everyone when you work. You should be always stronger also in difficult moment, because in life, you can have many difficult moments by in their moment you need to be very strong. This is this three passionate about what you do. Roberto Manzini, thank

Paul Barnett  12:23

you so much for your time today

Roberto Mancini  12:25

Paul Barnett  12:26
